Spending Christmas in the South Hams

Christmas is a magical time of the year and one that is well celebrated in the South Hams. Whether you are a local or someone who is looking to make the move to the area, we have gathered some of the best things to do in areas of the South Hams this Christmas:

Salcombe

Salcombe is the perfect place for Christmas shopping, thanks to so many independent boutique shops to choose from – and with the Christmas lights being switched on soon (6th December), Fore Street looks even more picturesque than usual.

You’ll find a range of top clothing brand shops, including Jack Wills, which was founded in Salcombe in 1999. If you are looking to explore the more artisanal side of Salcombe, Island Street is home to a range of art galleries and stalls laden with local produce – perfect for sorting those last-minute Christmas gifts.

Kingsbridge

Kingsbridge Celebrates Christmas is a yearly event that celebrates the arrival of Father Christmas and all the festive fun he brings along. Visitors will need to bring their appetites with them as there are plenty of food stalls in the Farmer’s Market, with the stallholders tempting passers-by with free samples.

The Kingsbridge ice rink is back and double the size of before, and now comes with a giant snow globe that is perfect for taking selfies in! What’s more, the event is free for the whole family during the day, and this year when it gets dark, there will be drinks, food, and live music to enjoy!

Ivybridge

Ivybridge has a host of Christmas-themed events from now until the big day, with The Watermark art centre playing host to a number of these occasions, including live screenings of The Nutcracker from the Royal Ballet and an artisan market. More details about the individual events can be found on the Ivybridge Town Council Facebook page.

During the run-up to Christmas, shops will stay open a little later to accommodate those who want to enjoy some late-night shopping and get some last-minute gifts.

Totnes

Totnes’ famous Christmas markets are back again this year, taking place every Tuesday in December (before Christmas Day) and will be brimming with things to do. With over 70 stalls expected this year, including delicious food and drink and independent businesses, there will be something for everyone.

If you have any littles with you, they will be sure to enjoy the gnome trail. With 40 hidden gnomes to spot, it promises to keep them amused while you shop.

Dartmouth

If you’re looking for something to do with the family, Dartmouth Steam Railway’s Christmas Train of Lights returns for another year and promises to be better than ever. The train departs from nearby Paignton and will be sure to dazzle again this year, with the vintage steam train adorned with thousands of sparkling lights. It really is a sight to behold. More information and ticket booking can be found here.

Pennywell Farm is also hosting its yearly nativity and Christmas events, featuring their adorable micro pigs amongst other friendly creatures. The little ones can jump on the tractor and trailer ride, visit Santa’s elves for a gift (and a free bag of sweets!) and finally wander through the enchanted forest to meet the big man himself. More information can be found on the Pennywell Farm website.
