Our top 10 picnic spots in the South Hams

There’s something gloriously nostalgic about a good old-fashioned British picnic. A checked blanket, crusty bread, lashings of lemonade (or a cheeky bottle of rosé), and the gentle hum of summer drifting over the hills. And where better to celebrate National Picnic Month than in the South Hams, where rolling countryside meets shimmering estuaries and secluded coves whisper, “come sit awhile”?

Whether you’re a seasoned South Devon local or a visitor keen to tuck into the region’s natural bounty (both edible and scenic), here are our top picnic-perfect spots in the South Hams.

The Ham, Dittisham

Tucked along the banks of the River Dart, The Ham in Dittisham is a grassy, family-friendly spot where the boats drift by and the air smells faintly of salt and summer. It's the ideal place for a family day out, especially if little ones want to burn off energy in the play area before settling down with sausage rolls. Plus, if you're feeling adventurous, hop on the foot ferry to Greenway for a post-picnic stroll around Agatha Christie’s former holiday home.

Mill Bay Beach, East Portlemouth

This peaceful sandy cove, just across the water from Salcombe, feels like a best-kept secret, even though it's beloved by generations of local families. With soft sand, gentle waves and dappled tree shade behind, it’s a top pick for beach picnics in South Devon with young children, especially if you fancy a paddle between mouthfuls. Just get there early, as with many Devon coastal picnic spots, parking is limited and the locals have known about this gem for years.

Bowcombe Creek & Slipway, Kingsbridge

Barely five minutes from Kingsbridge town centre lies Bowcombe Creek, a tidal estuary inlet that feels miles from anywhere. Grassy verges by the slipway make it a wonderful spot for a tranquil riverside picnic in the South Hams, particularly if you enjoy birdwatching or want to launch a paddleboard for a pre-lunch glide. Just keep one eye on the tide, it has a habit of creeping up quietly on daydreaming picnickers.

Dartington Hall Gardens, near Totnes

If you're in the mood for a slightly more refined affair, Dartington Hall delivers. Set among 1,200 acres of countryside, the estate grounds are both beautiful and peaceful, a perfect backdrop for a quiet, romantic lunch or a solo retreat with a book and a baguette. If you forget your packed lunch, the café has excellent options, and midweek visits mean more space (and fewer curious dogs sniffing your cheese sarnies!). Ideal for those seeking a tranquil picnic spot near Totnes, steeped in heritage and natural beauty.

Aveton Gifford Playing Fields

Right by the River Avon and backed by tall trees, the playing fields in Aveton Gifford offer space, shade, and simplicity. It’s an ideal choice for energetic families who want to kick a ball around, or anyone who appreciates the timeless charm of a riverside village picnic. The local community shop is a bonus; stock up on treats before settling in under the trees.

Ugborough Beacon, Dartmoor

For those who don’t mind earning their sausage rolls, Ugborough Beacon offers one of the best panoramic views in South Devon. A short but satisfying Dartmoor hike rewards you with sweeping vistas over the South Hams, perfect for a peaceful, breezy picnic that feels a world away from the daily grind. Do bring an extra layer though, it’s scenic, but can sometimes be windswept. This one’s for the lovers of remote countryside picnic spots in Devon.

Hope Cove Beach

This postcard-perfect seaside village is home to two beaches, a great pub, and more charm than you can shake a stick of rock at. It’s a perfect spot for a sand-between-the-toes lunch, particularly if you’re with the family and fancy a paddle after pudding. The inner beach tends to be more sheltered, making it a great choice if the breeze picks up. Hope Cove is a must-visit for those exploring coastal picnic spots in South Devon.

Wembury Point, Wembury

Wembury Point is one of the South Hams’ most rugged and dramatic picnic backdrops, with views across to the Mewstone and regular sightings of marine life, and the occasional wild pony! This coastal stretch is a dream for wildlife lovers and walkers who fancy a sit-down with their sandwiches mid-route. Just be sure to stick to the paths and keep dogs on leads. The ponies are lovely, but not to be trifled with.

Avon Dam Reservoir, Dartmoor

Start from Shipley Bridge and enjoy a gentle 40-minute walk along the river to Avon Dam, where grassy verges and shady glades line the route. If you prefer a bit more structure to your stop, there are two very handy picnic areas with benches, one at around 1.25km and another at 2km along the path, perfect for those who prefer a civilised seat with their sandwiches. Whether you pause at one of those or press on to the dam itself, it’s an utterly peaceful spot to take in the moorland stillness. Quiet, calm, and ideal for unplugging without venturing too far from the car park; a must for lovers of Dartmoor picnic walks and hidden corners of South Hams countryside.

Sugary Green & Sugary Cove, Dartmouth

With stunning views of the Dart estuary and Dartmouth Castle, Sugary Green is a top-tier picnic spot for those who love their lunch with a side of history. The green is flat and grassy, great for relaxed lounging, while Sugary Cove below is a hidden little beach perfect for a post-lunch dip. Just wear decent shoes, the path is steep and can be slippery, but the reward is worth the effort. One of the best secluded picnic spots in Dartmouth.

A final word

Picnics are simple joys, but in the South Hams, they become something truly special. Whether it’s a romantic hilltop lunch, a full-family beach day, or a solo riverside moment with a flask of tea, there’s a perfect spot waiting. Just remember to take your rubbish home, and leave only footprints (or, at most, a few crumbs for the gulls). Let’s keep this little corner of Devon as magical as we found it.
